February 2, 2009 - The little guy saw his shadow today so we are all in for another 6 weeks of winter. My copilot has asked me to inform you all that of she rules. By that I mean we made a series of bets last night on the Superbowl and I lost the over all pot to her - payday $3 for Sarah. Like Rick James, she is rich! On to better things.
Th ranger in Port Angeles was able to give us some great information on things to do in Olympic if you only have a short time to visit. First we drove up what seemingly was a logging road to Observation Point for our lunch stop. As we passed through the forest and climbed further away from sea level the clouds parted and left us with a beautiful sunny 45 minutes to eat our lunch. Here was our lunch view.
After lunch we jetted down the hill and got back on HWY 101 and headed west for the coast. We were debating of going up to the northwestern most point of the 48 states to Neah Bay for the night but we couldn't find get comfortable with driving 2 hours up there on roads that can be washed out and they staying on an Indian reservation. Instead we drove to Storm King Ranger Station and took a 1.5 hrs hike to Marymane Falls. The hike was through old growth forest with trees reaching well over 100ft +. As I said earlier the sun was glaring up all the pictures so the shots I took looking up at the trees didn't come out so great. If my internet service wasn't so shoddy I would have posted the pictures but instead you get this shot to prove how big these trees are.
We made it up to Marymane Falls in about 35/40 minutes. The hike was not hard at all and we passed over a beautiful blue/green running river. The park rangers had built a bridge using a downed tree. Again I would love to share the pictures but my internet connection stinks and I am not staying up all night doing this blog. Here is a picture of the "team" at the lower lookout point.
As I said before we decided to skip Neah Bay and instead drive around the park and head out to the ocean. We are staying in Forks, WA tonight at this little RV park that also has cabins. Our place is a one bedroom cabin with a tiny little bathroom and kitchen. The two ladies who run the operation, Ruby & Hope, couldn't have been any nicer. Sarah and I stopped at the Trading Post to ask for directions and pick up a bottle of wine for sunset. After about 15 minutes of talking to the ladies we were staying at their place and they had corked our bottle. Sometimes the nicest people show up in the strangest places, it is funny how things work out.
We took the Seattle - Bainbridge Ferry out of downtown this morning and then drove up to Port Angeles to visit the Olympic National Park Ranger Station. I took this shot from the ferry looking back at Seattle, too bad it the sun was glaring up the picture.

So we are about 5 miles inland from Rialto Beach where we sat and watched the sunset. We drove down to the beach found a little spot all to ourselves and shared a bottle of wine and a side of smoked salmon. There wasn't another sole down on the beach and it was probably one of the more romantic moments of my life. The mist/haze had blown in from the sea to cover the small off shore islands, the clouds broke ever so slightly and the sunset burned orange. I wish I had the pictures to share with you all the amazing moment Sarah and I had today, but I guess some things are better left to the imagination. As hard as losing my job has been, without it I would have never been able to see what I saw today. Here is my favorite picture of the trip so far.
Hope all are well.
