Luxury In A Cave

January 25, 2009 - We are in Central Washington in the town of Quincy. Lucky for us we stumbled onto our hotel via a google search and as it turns out it is our most memorable night of the trip so far. The place is called Cave B Inn at Sagecliff and doubles as a vineyard & spa retreat. http://www.sagecliffe.com/Inn.htm Our hotel room is literally built into the cliff walls of the Columbia River Valley. Here is our view from the room. Once we settled in to the room we took a walk through the vineyards and then went and tasted their home grown estate wines. The have about 15 different varietals that they grow here on the property. All of their wine is made from grapes grown right here and bottled right here. They have two different distribution labels, Cave B & Sagecliff. Because of the size of their property no single wine has a greater than 200 case per year output with many only having around 100 case output. The wine is very affordable at $16 - $35 per bottle and from what we tasted very good. Their out of state distribution is limited but can be ordered online if you join their wine club (free of charge). I know I sound like an informercial but the wine was very good and VERY well made. Here are some pictures of Sarah and I walking through the vineyards with the house dog Couvee.
Here is a picture of main building/restaurant looking up the hill from our room. You can see the different cliff houses along the walk up through the vineyard.
Here is the same shot taken last night after dinner on our walk home.

As you can see the place is amazing! The icing on the cake is that the owners of the vineyard are also the developers and former owners of the Gorge Amphitheater. If you are not familiar with this venue the best way to describe it is the most beautiful natural outdoor theater in America. Having lived in Denver and seen shows at Red Rocks one could probably argue that Red Rocks is the most unique or beautiful but if you have never seen the Gorge than you can't really have an informed opinion. I took this next picture from the fence line in the vineyard.
Here is a picture of the Gorge during a concert. AMAZING!!!

On the way to Cave B yesterday Sarah and I drove to Grand Coulee to see the Coulee Dam. The dam was part of Roosevelt's "New Deal" and was built from 1932 - 1941. It is the largest concrete structure in North America and the single largest hydro-electric producer in North America. Check out the website if you want to learn more. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Coulee_Dam

Here are a few pictures we took.

That's all for now. Check in again when we are north of the boarder.
